What Union Memorial A.M.E Church Believes Union Memorial A.M.E. Church is a part of the African Methodist Episcopal Church . Union Memorial believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God . The Holy Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation; so that whatever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man or woman. The A.M.E. church is the first and oldest African-American Institution in America. Founded in 1787. Union Memorial believes that the Scriptures teach that there is but one living and true God , eternally existing in three persons of one substance, and power. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. God's Son, Jesus Christ, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died on the cross in payment of man's sins. He was raised from the dead on the third day and shall return to judge all persons at the last day. (Thessalonians 4) Union Memorial believes that salvation is a free gift (Ephesians 2:8-9), given by God's grace and received by faith. That the Sacraments are acts or ceremonies that were instituted by Christ for the Body of Christ-The Church. The Afrrican Methodist Episcopal Church observes two sacraments: The Holy Communion and The Baptism . Holy Communion (The Lord's Supper-The Eucharist) is a remembrance of Christ's sacrificial death and glorious resurrection - a celebration of God's covenant of forgiveness, love, and hope. It is a reminder of God's presence among us and a source of grace helping to strengthen and renew our faith. Christ commanded his followers to remember him with this act. Baptism is the sacrament of initiation into the Body of Christ being the Church. (1 Corinthians 15:1-5) It joins the new members with Christians everywhere. The mode can be sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. Union Memorial believes the Church is the "Bride of Christ" and the Body of Christ. This local congregagtion is governed in accordance by sound biblical principals and the Doctrine and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (1 Timothy 3). The mission and purpose of the church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating Gospel through word and deed. Union Memorial teaches justification through faith . Justification and forgiveness of sins are the same in Methodist theology. Union Memorial teaches that the Holy Spirit bears witness to The Spirit. Can a person know that he/she is a Christian? Methodism answers, Yes. Sanctification is the work of The Holy Spirit. Holiness is the conformity of the heart and life to the law of God. Union Memorial believes that the Bible teaches that the Lord gives Christians, spiritual gifts which enable them to serve in the local church (Ephesians 4:11-16). Personal repentance towards our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is stressed as well as having faith in Jesus Christ. Both are unified in the Holy Scriptures. Union Memorial believes that as Christians we should be concerned with the total person. Thus Union Memorial is committed to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy through a continuing ministry of (1) preaching the Gospel, (2) feeding the hungry, (3) clothing the naked, (4) helping to house the homeless, (5) cheering the fallen, (6) helping to provide jobs for the jobless, (7) administering to the needs of those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, mental hospitals, senior citizen homes, caring for the sick, the shut-in mentally and socially disturbed, and (8) encouraging thrift and economic advancement (St. Luke 4:18).
